Shevaun Zakhir and Claire Curley of Broad Room

Broad Room welcomes creatives with a variety of talents and skills, and offers an affordable workspace in Midtown Sacramento. Membership fees not only help keep Broad Room’s doors open, but they help us continue to offer free and low-cost classes and events to the creatives in our community. In addition to savings on studio time and discounts, our memberships include invites to attend special events, previews, and receptions.

What about the Sacramento creative community inspires you?
The diversity! We work with folks of all nationalities, genders, and cultural backgrounds. We love seeing what our members create at the studio; we are constantly inspired!

If you were a superhero what would your power be and what would your name be?
We would be a Flamingo named Margaret who would always be relaxing.

Patricia Castillo of Leash and Collar

I am just a girl who loves her dogs. And shopping. As Sacramento is fast becoming a dog friendly city, I wanted to offer dog lovers, such as myself, the chance to buy unique accessories for their dogs as well as themselves. The end goal is to have a brick and mortar where I can house adoptable dogs and host adoption events. By shopping on-line or supporting us at a local pop up, you are helping us achieve the dream of giving back and saving lives. This is just the beginning.

What about the Sacramento creative community inspires you?
When I first decided to start my shop, I intended to source items from other makers. I searched Etsy and Faire and found some wonderful makers with great products. But I also figured out that I could make some things myself. I bought a sewing machine, watched YouTube and am now so proud to be able to tell customers, "Yes, I made that!" Then, I meet makers from events and am so inspired by their creativity and craftsmanship. It pushes me to work harder to create quality products that are unique. I also love talking to Sacramento makers about their journey. It gives me the courage to keep going knowing that others out there are sharing in the same struggles and experiences.

If you were a superhero, what would your power be?
My power would be to save all of the hurt, homeless, lonely, starving and abused dogs in the world. I would swoop them up and drop them off with loving families or a sanctuary where they could live happy and free.

Samaris Ferrer of Kokedama by Sama

Kokedama by: Sama offers traditional Japanese Moss Balls and macrame plant hangers. Kokedama literally translates from “koke” meaning moss and “dama” meaning ball. This type of moss ball has reappeared as modern art that is useful for uniquely displayed plants and flowers. Kokedama by: Sama artfully uses a variety of plants, such as the low maintenance and visually appealing succulents, combined with authentic natural macrame hangers that pair beautifully with each Kokedama.
